American flight controllers are increasingly seeking second jobs and calling in sick, as they continue to work unpaid during the government shutdown, the transport chief has stated.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

Following the government shut down on October 1st, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But some have been absent, causing terminals to stop or slow their flight operations, which has added to delays due to climate and additional factors.

More than 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to deteriorate further.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their worries directly.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I find an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day 22 alerts at airports indicated flights would be held up due to a lack of workers - one of the highest after the closure began.

The American federal closure reached its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in the past.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he would not answer directly when questioned if it was safe to fly in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my controllers focused on the airspace, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, some planes were stopped at LAX due to employee deficits, causing interruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland.

The FAA alert was issued at 08:45 local time on the weekend. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Flights at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to staffing shortages, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could encounter difficulties from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA warned passengers in the state to consult carriers about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of Game 3 of the championship, which is scheduled in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving holiday, among the peak periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on American aviation helped end a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. Back then, the halt had reached its fifth week and disrupted airline operations, including pilot training.
