Cancellieri Shows Brief Sparks of Brilliance in Silver Lining for Haywire Lazio

The feeling at their home stadium was anything but joyful during the weekend fixture. The home side was losing against Torino, a side that had allowed 10 goals while managing only two goals in their most recent five league matches. Supporters from the Curva Nord were wrapping up their latest protest in an ongoing feud with president Claudio Lotito.

This Year's Efforts Unraveling?

Was the team's progress falling apart, or was there ever a binding element holding it together from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, but then he publicly stated that the club had not mentioned a ban on new signings they were facing for accounting issues. Speculation that he could resign were unfounded, but he acknowledged that Lotito had "deceived" him.

The Roman club became as messy during matches as they were off it, overcoming Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but falling short in the remaining first five games, which included the capital clash. From one game to the next, it's been difficult to tell if they are improving or self-destructing.

The Youngster's Unforeseen Comeback

A single player kept smiling through it. Matteo Cancellieri was not even supposed to feature for Lazio this season. He was on last season with Parma on loan and, at the start of the off-season, his owning club were advocating for him to extend his stay for another season. The transfer ban led to a change of plans. Lazio could not afford to reduce their roster with no new signings.

He signed originally during Sarri's previous tenure, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He made 20 league appearances with the club in the 2022-23 season, almost all of those as a substitute. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, whose tenure ended after that campaign, subsequently claimed Sarri of "promising everyone Cancellieri was destined for stardom then never playing him."

Finding His Natural Fit

It's possible the coach was continuing to attempt to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as an attacking winger on arrival, Cancellieri yet was deployed for the majority of that term as an ineffective backup to Ciro Immobile at No 9. Across 63 games during spells with Empoli and Parma over the last two seasons, he netted seven goals. Shoehorn
