Citizens have assembled around the country to mark the second anniversary since the Hamas-led attack on October 7th, 2023, as discussions continued in Egypt over an end to the hostilities in Gaza.

The attack saw more than 1,200 people dead and 251 others captured back to Gaza as prisoners. It was the most most lethal day for the Jewish community since the Holocaust.

Israel reacted by launching a defensive operation in Gaza which has killed in excess of 67,000 people, as reported by the area's Hamas-run health ministry. Its numbers are seen as accurate by the UN and other global organizations.

"Our violent enemies have caused great damage, but they have not defeated us," Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Tuesday.

He also promised to "accomplish all the objectives of the war: the return of all the abducted, the removal of the Hamas regime and the guarantee that Gaza will no longer present a risk to Israel".

Remembrance Events Across Israel

The national leadership delayed formal remembrance events until mid-October - after the completion of the religious holiday season - but gatherings still occurred throughout the country on Tuesday.

A memorial ceremony for the families of Israeli citizens who died in the Hamas incident was conducted in the coastal city. Arranged by the affected families, it was televised across Israeli television channels.

Hours earlier, a minute's silence was respected around the country.

Negotiation Talks in Egypt

At the same time, Israeli and Hamas delegations met in the Egyptian Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a follow-up session of mediated discussions to examine the terms of the plan.

A high-ranking Palestinian official familiar with the negotiations said that an evening round of mediated discussions began at 7 PM local time.

The representative explained the day's discussions concluded without concrete outcomes, amid disagreements over the recommended Israeli withdrawal maps from Gaza and over guarantees Hamas wants to make certain Israel does not resume hostilities after the opening period of the deal.

He commented that the discussions are "difficult and have still not deliver any significant progress," but pointed out that facilitators are making efforts to reduce the disparities between the two sides.

Key Points in Negotiations

  • A lasting truce
  • The trade of the hostages still held by Hamas for Palestinian prisoners from Gaza
  • The removal of Israeli forces from Gaza
  • Arrangements for assistance deliveries
  • After-conflict management of the area

Public Sentiment

In Tel Aviv's Hostages Square previously, 29-year-old Hagar - whose brother lived through the incident on the Nova music festival, where many attendees were killed and numerous more were captured by Hamas militants - explained: "No location appears as home anymore and until every captive come back no one will have peace of mind."

"Once we see everyone home again, we can breathe anew. Then we can commence heal," she concluded.

Outside the leader's home in Jerusalem, people assembled to demonstrate their solidarity for the families of the captives. Israel reports 48 continue in captivity in Gaza, approximately twenty of whom are thought to be alive.

Activist one woman stated: "It's necessary do any agreement needed for the hostages to return. But we really want guarantees that we will be safe."

Surveys now regularly indicate that around the majority of the population prefer the conflict to end in as payment for the freedom of the abducted.

Gaza Circumstances

At the location of the music event, grieving people assembled to pay their respects.

From the site, the boom of military attacks and artillery could be detected just a short distance away in Gaza, where observers said the heavy Israeli bombardment continued.

In the urban center, bombardments were noted in the morning of that day in the west side district, sector and zone districts and in the eastern area of the community, as well Shati refugee camp to the north-west.

"Once the evening comes, the fear appears with it," evacuated Gaza City resident Emaan al-Wahidi, whose 17-year-old son was died by an Israeli bombing last year, shared.

"My family are fearful of the bombings. Throughout the evening we are lying together, holding each other, notably my youngest child who puts his head on me throughout the night."

"Constantly we look at the updates to see what happened. And I'm concerned that this ceasefire will not be completed and that the war will return to us."

Health Emergency

Al-Shifa hospital in Gaza City said it had accepted the remains of several people by the daytime, including several killed in an Israeli strike in the southern al-Sabra neighbourhood.

A different healthcare center in the southern urban center of Khan Younis said additional fatalities had been delivered. One of them was lost his life by Israeli forces while seeking aid to the south region, medical staff stated.
