Jets Head Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After New York City Incident
New York Jets coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with cornerback Kris Boyd and is confident the player will recover well after being shot in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn shared that Boyd, who is hospitalized, was “upbeat” during a recent discussion.
“What reassures me, is that he’s feeling positive,” Glenn stated on Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as critical but stable.
“Not certain at the moment,” Glenn remarked. “But I will say this, from our conversation, his attitude was encouraging. And again, that puts my mind at ease, because of his outlook and he expresses himself so positively.”
NYPD shared video stills earlier this week of a suspect in the incident involving Boyd. What prompted the attack is still being looked into and officials stated it is unknown if Boyd was the intended victim. No one else was hurt according to reports.
The incident occurred just after 2am on Sunday morning about halfway between the famous arena and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, twenty-nine, was taken to a local hospital after suffering a wound to the stomach, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn shared Boyd has been on his mind “a ton” since the news broke. He further stated that Boyd and his wife recently welcomed a baby.
“The first thing I thought about, he recently became a father,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, considering his child and I want to make sure that he’s OK. Those thoughts dominated my thinking.
“There is a procedure involved, that I won’t detail, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd did not participate in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on mid-August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
He joined the Jets as a new signing in March and was projected as a significant contributor of a revamped special teams unit under the coach and special teams coordinator the special teams coach. But Boyd was injured during a training camp practice on early August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while healing from his surgery.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn said. “Certainly, he comes to the games all the time. His commitment is total. Given his status as a special teams standout, he’s done a really good job of helping the other guys we have.”
Boyd, from Texas, played his first four seasons with the Vikings after his selection in the later rounds by Minnesota out of the University of Texas in the 2019 draft. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with the Jets in March.
