Line of Duty Confirmed for 7th Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th installment, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode season written by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland this spring, according to the network.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "so excited" about the series' return. Her co-star added, "How wonderful it is to know that the Three Amigos will be reuniting together soon."
The previous series wrapped up in 2021 with a finale that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been widespread for some time, but official word only arrived this week.
New Challenges for AC-12
The seventh season will open with AC-12 having been disbanded and renamed as the new police oversight body, according to production details.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Adrian Dunbar's part continue working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
Their work "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio will take on their "most delicate case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, Det Insp Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer known for busts of criminal networks, faces allegations of misusing his authority to become a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still operating in the shadows, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over multiple series and we are thrilled to be returning for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while the series was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
Martin Compston described appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Not only the show's success but the colleagues I've worked with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he added.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy Line of Duty is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
The veteran actor noted: "As we count down the AC-12 return, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the announcement and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Show History
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Lennie James.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will premiere.
The conclusion of series six brought the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team said at the time there were no intentions for further series.
Nevertheless, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
