Outrage Surges as Trump's Social Media Remarks on Director Rob Reiner Ignites Sharp Rebuke
Figures from both sides of the partisan spectrum and the Hollywood world are uniting to condemn Donald Trump for his comments in the wake of the tragic deaths of esteemed director Rob Reiner and his wife, Michele.
A Provocative Social Media Statement
After the couple were found deceased at their Brentwood residence, Trump took to social media to label the late director as "tortured and suffering". The message, he claimed Reiner's death was "because of the hostility he provoked others through his enormous, unyielding, and untreatable condition with a mind-crippling disease known as TRUMP DERANGEMENT SYNDROME".
The post then pivoted to self-praise, juxtaposing Reiner's supposed "raging obsession" and "obvious paranoia" with what Trump described as the "unprecedented era of America".
Law Enforcement Update and Detention
Authorities have since announced the arrest of the Reiners' 32-year-old son, Nick, on charges related to murder in relation to the case. It is reported his bond was established at a significant sum.
A Torrent of Condemnation from Public Figures
The response to Trump's words was immediate and harsh.
“What a vile and despicable statement,” said actor Patrick Schwarzenegger.
Television host Whoopi Goldberg, who described Reiner a close acquaintance, similarly criticized the remarks. She referenced prior comments from Trump about political violence, asking, "Have you no shame? Can you get any lower?"
The state of California's Democratic governor, Gavin Newsom, simply wrote, "This is a sick man."
Mirroring this view, US House member Maxwell Alejandro Frost declared, "What a contemptible piece of trash."
Senator Chris Murphy added, "Trump has just crossed a line. Now saying the Reiners caused their own demise because they didn’t support him. So sick."
Criticism from Within Political Ranks
A number of GOP elected officials also voiced dismay.
Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene emphasized that the situation was "a family tragedy, not about politics or political enemies". Greene also mentioned struggles with substance abuse and mental health within families.
Another GOP representative, Thomas Massie, labeled Trump's discourse "unacceptable and disrespectful" considering the nature of the deaths. He publicly dared others in his political party to defend the statements.
The Director's Legacy and Stance on Trump
Rob Reiner was consistently a vocal detractor of Donald Trump. In a past conversation, he stated Trump was "mentally unfit" for the office. He had also warned about the risks of autocracy should Trump return to power.
"There is autocracy making its move around the world," Reiner noted. "If we fall, there’s a danger that democratic systems collapse around the world."
Despite his strong criticisms, Reiner had previously shown "absolute horror" and denounced violence for political ends unequivocally following the killing of another individual.
A Notable Link: The Art of the Deal
Providing a layer of past irony, Michele Reiner, previously Michele Singer, was the artist who shot the photograph for Donald Trump's 1987 book, The Art of the Deal.
Rob Reiner had previously recounted the anecdote of the photo shoot, mentioning Trump's demand for "a specific hair product" as being photographed on a high-rise overlooking Central Park.
