Historical Remarks on Prisoners
Over Bolsonaro’s four-decade political career, the conservative former soldier exhibited little sympathy for Brazil’s inmates.
“For what reason must we offer these lowlifes a easy time?” he previously wondered. “They deserve to be fucked, end of story. That's my view.”
On another occasion, Bolsonaro stated: “Unless you desire to finish there, all you have to do is to avoid sexual assault, kidnap or rob.”
Jail Destination Discussion
However the idea of Bolsonaro himself winding up in the Papuda prison maximum security prison in Brasília has appalled backers, a group of four this week toured the facility in an obvious effort to dissuade the supreme court from transferring him there.
Izalci Lucas, a lawmaker from Bolsonaro’s Liberal party who was among that group, claimed he anticipated the septuagenarian leader to be incarcerated in the coming fortnight and was concerned his assigned prison could be Papuda.
He asserted Bolsonaro’s severe gut ailments – the consequence of a near-fatal assault during the 2018 presidential campaign – implied it would be dangerous to keep the one-time head of state there. “His [health] situation is very grave. He will not be able to handle it if they send him to Papuda … It could be awful,” he added, who also voiced anxiety about cramped cells and the standard of prison meals.
When inspecting Papuda, Lucas noted seeing cells accommodating four dozen prisoners: “That’s almost one square metre per inmate.
“We talked to the inmates and they grumble, naturally, of the terrible meals,” added the senator.

He must not continue being his self-appointed guard for his entire life.”
He observed how Bolsonaro allies, who have spent years applauding the tough conditions of inmates, had suddenly become aware to their privileges. “Recently has the conservative fringe – which has consistently argued that civil liberties were not for offenders – opted to inspect a prison to learn what situations are truly like,” he said.
“The former president is a offender,” Otoni insisted, but that did not mean he deserved “humiliating, demeaning treatment”.
Possible Jail Conditions
Despite speculation that Bolsonaro could be transferred to Papuda, which currently contains about 14,000 inmates, his expected location looks to be a close prison for officers and other “unique” inmates referred to as Papudinha (Minor Papuda).
