The National Basketball Association campaign begins now, marking the initial occasion in a decade that Aussie two biggest hoops names – Ben Simmons and Patty Mills – are teamless.

This change indicates a transition period, as Boomers’ guard pair Josh Giddey and Dyson Daniels emerge as essential players for playoff aspirants, with recently signed huge contracts making them some of the country's top sporting earners.

But they are not alone. Fourteen Australians are expected to play for minutes across the NBA, ranging from veteran centres Jock Landale and Duop Reath, emerging wings in Johnny Furphy and Josh Green, to promising rookies like Tyrese Proctor and Rocco Zikarsky.

Josh Giddey Out to Prove Himself

After lengthy negotiations with the Chicago Bulls, the guard finally signed his new deal worth US$100 million (A$153 million) over four seasons recently. It's a major deal for the Melbourne native, but in league standards it is cheap for his role and reputation as a primary ball-handler. Hesitation for Chicago’s front office to offer a max deal means the 23-year-old enters this year with much to prove.

Having been traded by the Thunder at the beginning of last campaign, Giddey observed as his old team charged to the NBA championship without him. As the Chicago look to make the playoffs in the less competitive Eastern Conference, he will need to show his scoring and defensive skills are elite-level or else he may fall back towards the league's outskirts.

Dyson Daniels Targets Further Growth

Daniels agreed to the identical contract as his counterpart recently, and after his MIP honor last year, the Hawks guard’s career has skyrocketed in the city following his departure from the Pelicans. He is now lauded as one of the NBA's best defensive specialists, and topped the league in takeaways with three per game – over one full steal per game greater than the tally of the runner-up.

Performing next to flamboyant Trae Young in the Hawks, the youngster can be effective this campaign as a secondary ballhandler and defensive stopper as long as the team advance to the postseason. But if he can elevate his long-range game, which was below league average last season, and keep develop his passing and driving, Daniels could become one of the league’s most well-rounded talents.

Should anyone question Patty Mills was planning to end his career, he answered them with a workout video posted on his social media recently, demonstrating the 37-year-old is still sharp and focused on securing one more league deal.

Simmons' intentions is anyone’s guess after an off-season in Australia, angling and using with a Sherrin. Even though he posted on Instagram recently to reject rumors he was done, the former All-Star – an All Star as recently as 2021 – has yet to surface.
