The British driver Lando Norris Secures Maiden Formula One Drivers' Crown in Yas Marina In Spite Of Max Verstappen's Grand Prix Victory.

In a display of gutsy driving, the McLaren driver has sealed his maiden F1 world title by achieving P3 at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. A podium was enough for the 26-year-old driver, even though his rival Max Verstappen took the victory and his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri finished in second.

The driver performed exactly what was required in an extremely high-pressure race at the Abu Dhabi track, including a series of bold overtakes, with impeccable work from both the driver and his McLaren squad.

An Important Feat for British Motorsport and McLaren

By winning his maiden world championship, Norris becomes the eleventh British driver to achieve this. It also brings to an end McLaren's title wait, which stretched back to 2008 when Lewis Hamilton was their last champion. Additionally, it had been 27 years since McLaren achieved the championship double back in 1998.

It represents a stunning revival for the team, from a low point in the mid-2010s when they twice finished ninth in the standings. This resurgence has been spearheaded by boss Zak Brown and, most recently, by Andrea Stella, who has built an well-drilled outfit with a very fast car.

The Story of the Teammates

For the Australian Oscar Piastri, who had looked so strong for a large part of the campaign, there was clear frustration at faltering in the final third. Several of poor performances and some errors, such as a crash in Baku, proved costly. However, he finishes the season having shown he is also of champion caliber. To have been so competitive in only his third year in F1, with seven wins, remains very impressive.

Max Verstappen too had been exceptional to take the title battle down to the last race. He did all he could in Abu Dhabi with the race victory, but having come back from a 104-point deficit in August, he fell just short of having the points to catch Norris, finishing just two points behind.

Closing it Out with Clinical Precision

Norris closed out his success with ruthless focus to win the championship that had been so close but remained just out of grasp as McLaren found themselves floundering at the last two rounds. These included a double disqualification in Las Vegas and then an questionable tactical decision in Qatar.

It was no little accomplishment for the driver in his seventh season in F1, all of them with McLaren. He remained loyal to the squad even during some difficult periods, believing they would come good. That belief was vindicated in Abu Dhabi.

He has done a hugely impressive job to stick at his goal, maintaining his composure and belief even when under pressure. After losing the lead to Piastri earlier, he still worked at getting the most from what he could.

The Title-Deciding Grand Prix

At the start, Verstappen held his first place through the first corner, but the three title leaders avoided contact. Piastri, starting on the more durable compound, was feisty and made a spectacular move to go round the outside of Norris to claim second place.

This demonstrated the McLarens were free to race, but left Norris under threat from the Charles Leclerc. Early pit visits saw Norris emerge in midfield traffic, but he overtook rivals within a lap and displayed great composure in his race craft.

During the race, he made an absolutely bravura move to dive past two cars at once, moving up to fourth and closing on Verstappen's teammate. Red Bull instructed their driver to delay Norris, which resulted in a dramatic assault where Norris burst up the inside line, nearly leaving the track.

The incident was investigated by the race officials, with several impossibly tense laps elapsing before a penalty for his rival and exoneration for Norris was decided. This bold move without being held up was vital to his championship bid.

Diverging Fortunes

As Norris became the first Briton to take the title since Lewis Hamilton in 2020, the contrast in fortunes between the two was pronounced. While the new generation fought for the title, Hamilton, the veteran, could only finish eighth place in Abu Dhabi, a disappointing ending to a dismal season with Ferrari.

His first season with the Scuderia had been greeted with excitement but produced what was easily his worst season ever, finishing sixth in the championship and failing to secure a podium. He has looked jaded in the final rounds and will look to reset over the off-season.
