The Reform UK leader Claims Teachers of ‘Indoctrinating Children’ on Race Issues
Nigel Farage has asserted that educators would initiate walkouts shortly after a Reform UK election victory, accusing them of “harming young minds” by telling students that African-Caribbean youth are oppressed and white children oppressors.
During an event for a private US Christian college, Farage outlined his perspective on the UK education system, claiming that the “Marxist left” had “taken over schooling”.
“I’m anticipating a walkout by educators soon after winning the next general election,” Farage commented during a Q&A session.
“They are poisoning our kids. They are telling them to feel guilt about their nation. They inform little Johnny, who’s eight, who is black that he is a victim and little Oliver, who is white, who is eight that he is an oppressor. They are dividing us, instead of fostering unity. They are feeding this harmful mindset.”
In response to these assertions, Daniel Kebede dismissed the idea that the schools were under Marxist influence as “nonsense”. Kebede noted that any strikes must relate to educators’ working conditions, and doubted whether Reform would attack these right after taking office.
“The politician has crafted his public life on coded rhetoric and now, like Trump, he is lining up teachers and their unions for a conflict,” the union leader said.
“I think that’s grossly irresponsible. Neither I nor our union – push critical race theory as he’s suggesting … If he were to lead the government he would undermine state services, particularly schooling … and he would be a disaster for education and children.”
Reform, which tops surveys by about 10 points, has provided limited specifics on its educational plans and seems not to have appointed an education spokesperson.
Nonetheless, Farage’s remarks suggested the party would overhaul the system and the curriculum. He said: “We have got a massive job with schooling – truly monumental. And, it won’t happen quickly; it requires years, years to turn this around.”
He stated that gen Z was more open to analytical thought, but millennials were “absolutely hopeless”.
Paying tribute to a conservative activist, he commented: “All I want education to do to foster independent thought – to instruct people that there are two points of view and they should decide for themselves rather than what’s happening now where one is virtuous and one is evil. It’s a massive job in both Britain and America.”
Reform has previously clashed with the UK’s largest teaching union, after Kebede called the party “extremist and prejudiced” and dismissed Farage as “a poundshop Donald Trump”.
Farage has accused Kebede of being “an avowed radical” … someone who is absolutely determined that young minds be corrupted through education, their thinking tainted about everything to do with this country” and maintained that the union is trying to indoctrinate youth opposed to his party.
Almost one million people work in schools in the UK, with educators comprising half and the remainder being assistants and administrative personnel. The leading teachers’ organization has hundreds of thousands of members.
Countrywide walkouts over educators’ salaries and work environment in 2023 led to significant interruptions in schools and extensive missed instruction for students.
During the American gathering, the Reform leader also pledged to help spread the digital courses of the institution in the UK. He said such groups were “key to resistance”, adding that: “I mean this. I will help garner hundreds of thousands, if not millions of youth to these educational programs. I make that commitment now and I will follow through.”
The institution, a small private Christian college, provides complimentary classes. According to its online description: “Comprehensive learning is necessary for personal happiness and to perpetuate the blessings of civil and religious liberty. The college furnishes these beautiful courses for free to every interested learner.”
